From Research to Action: Measuring Knowledge Translation Efforts

Published in
by JSI

Research alone does not automatically translate into improved health outcomes, its true impact depends on how effectively findings are understood, communicated, and applied. This briefer explains why measuring knowledge translation (KT) is essential for determining whether research findings reach the right audiences, are used in decision-making, and drive action. As a companion piece to the ZDLH Knowledge Translation for Zero-Dose Immunization Research toolkit, it outlines the KT continuum from dissemination to impact; presents a theory of change that links KT inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and long-term improvements; and describes practical indicator types—including process, reach, use, action, change, and outcome measures. The briefer also offers strategies to strengthen KT measurement, integrate indicators into existing monitoring, evaluation, and learning efforts, and track whether evidence contributes to improvements in policies, programs, or health outcomes. A quick KT measurement checklist provides a clear starting point for planning, tracking, and refining KT efforts.
